THE NEXT day, Nick went to the pack manor for a brief meeting with Elijah and Cole to discuss the incident from the previous evening, as well as the events that had unfolded in Senaka. He gave a stoic recount of everything up to and including Thayne’s current presence in his own home. Cole cornered him outside just before he went to leave with Ryan to speak with Wheaton Little and demanded Nick tell him the truth about Thayne. Nick tried to get out of it, but Cole wouldn’t let up until he spilled the beans, so to speak.
“I know you better than that, Nick,” Cole challenged.
“Yeah, I know you do.” Nick sighed. Ryan was still inside the house, having needed to use the bathroom before leaving. He’d shown up at the pack manor so they could drive into Redwood City together. Nick looked toward the lake to avoid having to meet Cole’s eyes.
“Talk to me, Nick,” Cole said quietly, resting against the side of the Impala near Nick. “I’ve seen what the rejection from this Thayne has done to you, and now with him being here, the bond cemented, it can’t be easy.”
Easy? Would his life ever be easy again? Nick shrugged. “I can’t feel him, Cole. Not unless he’s drunk, anyway,” he said bitterly.
“He’s got his walls up,” Cole observed.
“That’s an understatement, Cole. He’s got more than just walls up. He’s got the entire goddamn castle, mortars and all.” Nick ran a hand through his hair, mussing up the neat style. “Everyone keeps telling me to give him a chance. To let him come to me. But what if he doesn’t? No one wants to talk about what happens if he doesn’t. They all seem to think that the almighty fucking connection between us is supposed to fix everything.”
Cole gave him a shocked look. “Nick! You’ve always believed in the mating bond. Has everything really changed that for you? Even when we were kids, you couldn’t stop talking about who your mate would be, what they would look like, and how you’d know it the moment you met them. You knew even back then your mate would be male and big, almost Alpha big. Isn’t he what you thought he would be?”
“He’s both of those,” Nick said in a flat tone. “Only I never once thought he wouldn’t want me.”
Nick remembered those innocent moments of his youth. He really had spent a lot of time growing up thinking of his mate, knowing they were out there and waiting for him to find them. Maybe that was why it stung his pride so much. He’d never seen any wolf outright reject their other half. Not even Seth, who’d been petrified of being part of another pair after Taggart.
Nick’s cell phone rang, disrupting his internal thoughts. He pulled it out of his pocket and saw his cousin’s name on the ID. “Hey, Carter,” he bid tiredly.
Cole patted him on the shoulder and hooked his thumb toward the house to show he was going back inside.
